How to Measure Your Small Dog for Clothes (Neck, Chest and Back Length)

Pet clothing sizing can vary by style, cut, material and manufacturer. A Small in one style may fit differently from a Small in another, so the most reliable starting point is your own dog's measurements. Here is how to take the three we use at Keka Apparel: neck, chest and back length.

What you need

  • A soft measuring tape
  • Your dog standing naturally on all four legs
  • A pen and paper to write the numbers down

The three measurements

1. Neck

Measure around the base of the neck, where the collar normally sits.

2. Chest

Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.

3. Back length

Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

Keep the tape snug but not tight.

Compare your numbers with the product's size chart

Do not choose a size based only on the size your dog usually wears. Whenever a product-specific size chart or fit note is available, use that first: the measurements on the product page take priority over general sizing guidance. For example, the Yellow Slicker Dog Raincoat lists neck, chest and back length for each size, and the Plaid Harness Vest asks you to use neck, chest and back measurements as your guide.

Read each chart's wording carefully. Some product pages show garment measurements, taken directly from the garment, rather than ranges for your dog's body, so check what the chart is describing before you compare.

If your dog is between sizes

We generally recommend choosing the larger size for comfort, unless the product page gives different fit guidance. Some styles are designed to fit more closely and others more loosely, so always read the product-specific notes. Our article Between Sizes? How to Pick the Right Size for Your Small Dog covers this in more detail.

Not sure which size to choose?

Email us at kekaapparel@gmail.com with your dog's neck, chest and back length measurements before ordering, and we will help you choose the best available size. Sizing guidance helps you pick the best option from the measurements provided, but it cannot guarantee a perfect fit because every dog has different proportions.
